Hypertension and Arteriosclerosis Print

Hypertension is a common occurrence after the age of 40. Hypertension still causes about 12% of deaths, and approximately 20% of the world population suffers from hypertension.

Blood pressure is primarily determined by cardiac activity, vascular resistance and blood flow. It is generally believed that hypertension is due to the demands of modem lifestyle which is basically stress.

Prof. Takagi conducted study of active ginseng components which counter-balance high and low blood pressure: water-extract-dialysate elevated whereas the undialysable butanol extract lowered it.

Prof. Lee reported that ginseng relieved hypertension by relaxing the smooth muscle of blood vessels.

Prof. Popov reported good results in the management of atherosclerosis with ginseng. He administered ginseng to a group of atherosclerosis patients with cholesterol levels of 280 to 310 mg%, which dropped to the normal range with ginseng. He also reported a 56 year old male patient that was suffering from bilateral cryptochism, azospermia, mild diabetes mellitus with refractory hypertension and myocardial infraction which has been persistent for 8 years. The serum cholesterol level was 325 to 375 mg% which persisted even with various treatments. With ginseng administered twice a day for two weeks, and then once a day afterward without any medication, his blood pressure returned to the normal range and serum cholesterol level fell to 225 mg% with the disappearance of glucosuria, and later he could enjoy a normal life without recurrence.
